UMPQUA DAIRY HISTORY
Umpqua Dairy Products, Co. was founded in 1931 by Ormond Feldkamp and Herb Sullivan with $500, a 1929 Hudson delivery truck and a little wooden ice house next to the railroad tracks on Sykes Street in Roseburg, Oregon. The pair began bottling milk, churning butter and making ice cream to sell to railroad passengers as they stopped at the train station in Roseburg. Soon they began delivery routes throughout the county. In 1936 the wooden building housing the original Umpqua Dairy was torn down and a new brick building was built in its place. A portion of this building still stands today, incorporated into the newer facility.
Umpqua Dairy is located in Roseburg, the heart of the Umpqua Valley. The beautiful Umpqua region is home to more than 100 valleys, the scenic Umpqua River and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians. Archaeological evidence from different areas of the state provide information about villages and traditional lifeways dating back many thousands of years. The Land of Umpqua settlement history dates back to the late 1700s & early 1800s, when settlers came to this area and discovered the beauty of flowing rivers and fertile farm lands that are still an agricultural bounty today. Umpqua Dairy has continued to grow and prosper through the years being the first in the Northwest to introduce the half gallon round ice cream container in the late 1940s commonly referred to as our 'red round'. The original logo design, created in the early 1930s was inspired by the Native American culture in the area. The now famous Indian head logo design is still reminiscent today in all of our packaging. In 1946 Umpqua Dairy became the first dairy in Oregon to put milk in paper quarts, pints and half pints.
In 1953, Herb suffered a stroke, retired and sold his portion of the business to Ormond. Ormond was succeeded by his son Barton D. (Bob) Feldkamp in 1962. Under Bob's leadership, Umpqua Dairy grew 10 fold, expanding distribution to Josephine, Jackson and Coos Counties and in 1974 became an official member of the national Quality Chekd organization.www.qchekd.com Quality Chekd is a member-owned organization of more than 28 independent dairy processors located throughout the United States, Mexico, El Salvador and Colombia. Headquartered in Naperville, Illinois, Quality Chekd provides member dairies with the support services they need to assure that consumers receive the highest quality dairy products possible. As a partner with Quality Chekd, Umpqua Dairy has gained knowledge as well as become one of the leading dairies nationwide in product quality, marketing, package design and employee leadership. Distribution centers were opened in Coos Bay (1977) and Grants Pass (1978).
The family tradition continues today, as third generation Feldkamps, Doug and Steve guide Umpqua Dairy by the same principles as their father and grandfather. Under their direction Umpqua Dairy has thrived, doubling the number of employees and expanding the production & maintenance facilities. Umpqua Dairy also expanded distribution of milk and ice cream throughout the state of Oregon, and opened depots in Klamath Falls (1994), Portland (1994), Eugene (1999), Central Point (2006) and Salem (2007). The Feldkamps have also brought local and regional recognition to our products, by annually bringing home the gold, first place and sweepstakes trophies at the annual Oregon Dairy Conference in fluid milk production, ice cream and cultured products. Also, national brand awareness by bringing home Quality Chekd's Top Production Award (Formerly the Wayne Gingrich Award) (1996, 2013, 2015 (Ice Cream & Culture), 2016 (Ice Cream & Culture) and 2017 (Ice Cream)) and the prestigious national Irving B.
