"Umpqua Dairy was proud to be an official sponsor of the summer long Oregon Quarter campaign. Umpqua Dairy helped to launch the newly minted Oregon Quarter on June 15th, 2005 in downtown Portland with free ice cream for the crowd of more than 4,000 people. The event marked the official release of the Crater Lake themed Oregon quarter. Umpqua Dairy will also serve up more ice cream at the official closing ceremony and dedication to take place at Crater Lake on August 24-25, 2005.
The State of Oregon was honored with the third quarter to be released in 2005, and the 33rd in the United States Mint’s 50 State Quarters program. On February 14, 1859, Oregon became the 33rd state to be admitted into the Union. Oregon’s coin design features a portion of Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States, viewed from the south-southwest rim. The design incorporates Wizard Island, as well as Watchman and Hillman Peaks on the lake’s rim and conifers. The coin bears the inscription “Crater Lake”. The design was selected by the Oregon quarter committee from over a hundred submitted designs from Oregon residents/artists.
Last year, under a charge from Governor Ted Kulongoski, the “Explore and Win” (Oregon Quarter Launch) promotion was developed by a group of tourism professionals from southern Oregon, Crater Lake National Park, Travel Oregon and the Governor’s Office to celebrate the new Oregon quarter and encourage travelers from around the state, the country and the world to explore Oregon.
Umpqua Dairy, founded in 1931 was proud to be selected to represent Oregon for this momentous occasion.”
